Crymod Download Database - A How-to Guide

Tutorial: How to add files to Crymod properly

Hi Crymod Community,

I'm relatively new to the DB staff and I'm still in that transitional phase where I'm learning how DB stuff works but still remember how being a member works. This gives me an advantage where I can see things from both sides and create an easy to understand link between both parties. One thing I've noticed as I continue to go through the files that are uploaded onto Crymod is that they're uploaded in many various ways. One person does X, the other person does Y and another person does Z. This constant, erratic change makes it somewhat difficult and time consuming for DB staff and unfortunately it means that files take longer to activate.

So, let me introduce to you a quick, easy, 5-step guide to getting your file online, the right way, the easy way and the quick way Smile

Step One:
  • Clicking on "Insert File" in the Downloads section of the Crymod Portal will take you to this screen.

Step Two:
  • For this tutorial I'm going to upload a map I created called "ASV". In the picture below you can see the contents of the map folder. Something you should try and remember to do is move all the .bak files before archiving as these are un-required backup files that can take up a lot of MB. Also, if you don't want people to be able to edit your map, move the .cry file too.

Step Three:
  • If you don't already have WinRAR, get it. Go to your Levels directory and find your map folder. Right click on it and click "Add to MapName.rar". You will then have a MapName.rar file in that main directory. This is the file you will upload to Crymod. It's always a good idea to virus scan the files too!

Step Four:
  • Once the file is uploaded you'll be taken back to the Insert File screen and all the fields will still be blank. Fill them in as best as you see fit. Refer to the screenshot below for a guideline. Filling in this part as best as you can is an important step in getting your file activated sooner. If you save the DB staff from having to edit this section too much then we can click the "activate" button sooner.

Full list of the BBcode used is listed in the second post of this article

Step Five:
  • The fifth and last step is also an important one in getting your file activated quicker. It's a requirement to have screenshots on the file, so by you attaching appropriate screenshots when uploading, this saves the DB staff from having to do so. To attach up to 5 screenshots, click on the "Upload Screenshots" button.

Finished Product:
  • If all has gone well you should have something like this come up on your screen once you click the "Save" button. From here the DB staff will review the file, virus scan it, check that it works, edit the entry and once all that is done, click the magic Activate button!

Thanks for reading,

The CryMOD Database Staff

Download DataBase FAQ
Work in progress! Check for updates and please post your questions!

Q: Is ok for me to have spaces in my folder name or in my .cry file name?
  • A: No, it's not. When you have a space in the folder name or in the .cry filename (when you export to engine) it causes an issue and the engine can't read files properly. Instead, you should use an underscore "_" to separate words in file/folder names.

Q: I've uploaded a file to the DDB and in my profile the number of Filebase Entries has increased but i can't find my file. Where is it?
  • A: Your profile Entry number increments as soon as you submit your file entry, however, you will not see your file until it's activated by Crymod DB staff.

Q: Does Crymod host config/tweaks?
  • A: Yes! Config/tweaks are now hosted on Crymod again.

Q: Should I attach screenshots with my file?
  • A: Yes, it is a requirement that at least one screenshot is shown with every file. Instead of uploading the image to an image hosting website, attach it with your file.

Q: My map isn't 100% finished/ready, should I upload it anyway?
  • A: No, files that don't function correctly will not be activated. If this happens with your file you will be PM'd with a description of the fault in the hopes that it can be fixed and the the file uploaded again.

Q: I'm not exactly sure which files in my map folder I should include?
  • A: James-Ryan put together a handy list of files and their descriptions, along with further related links here

Q: Is there a list of BBcode I can copy and paste from for my file?
  • A: Sure is! Check below for a list of common entries.

Q: I've updated my level/object/etc and now i want to update my Crymod DB entry, how?
  • A: Simply upload your updated version like it was a new file but ensure you have a "version" higher than "1.0" as that's what DB Staff look for. It also helps if you mention it in the text box.

Tutorial: How to properly create a .PAK file

As a DB staff member, I noticed that most of you don't know how to properly pack a working .PAK file, so I decided to create this little tutorial.

Step 1 - Preparing the files:
Prepare the files. So, for example, you have a custom weapon that needs to be packed. The weapon is already animated and rigged. That means you will need to create 3 folders, called Objects, Scripts and Animations. Now copy the files in the proper folder, with the necessary subfolders, for example, if you have a weapon script, you must put it Scripts\Entities\Items\Xml\Weapons. When you're sastisfied with your placement, it's time to create a PAK file.

Step 2 - Creating a PAK file:
Now, select the folders you want to pack. In our case, these folders are Objects, Animations and Scripts. Once selected, right click on them and select Add to archive. If you wan't to do this, you will need a program called WinRar. You can download the free version here.

Anyways, if you click the add to archive button, a new window will pop up. In the new popup window, change the Archive format to ZIP, and change the archive name to something apropriate, for example zz_customweapon.zip. Change the zz_customweapon.zip into zz_customweapon.pak. Then press OK.

Step 3 - Placing the PAK file:
So, when you are done packing, you can add it to your Crysis/Game directory, because this is where the zz_***.pak files should be stored. If the file was an object, it should appear in the brush library, under the folder name that was in the .pak file. If the file was anything else, for example a character or a sound, then the locations of these files will be somewhere else, but it is assumed that you will know where. If the file is a weapon, you can simply add it via flowgraph, or type this in the console before jumping in game in the editor: i_giveitem <name of the weapon>. Remember, test the functionality of the .PAK file before uploading it to Crymod or anywhere else. And that's pretty much it. If you have any questions, post them here, or PM me.

Now, if the file is properly tested and working, you can upload it to the Crymod DataBase or any other place you want.

Thanks for reading my little tutorial,

Vigilante and Crymod DataBase Staff

No, cry files are very interesting because we can learn loads of things with it ! Tongue
And I find it better to share our knowledge than keep it like a ridiculous secret.

Anyway thank you very much Shinanigans for this very usefull tutorial.

haha. Even the simplest of things can sometimes be misunderstood Smile

Thanks for the sticky Stringer and thanks for the thanks everyone else.

Post #2 has been edited with a short FAQ and BBcode for file entries. Please, if you have a question that you think should be in the FAQ (no matter how silly you might think it is!) please post it up and i'll add it in.

Cheers.

You can't imagine what kind of uploads the db team sometimes has to fix ^^
(aka, no description... at all, or no pictures, or simply maps that don't work)
They then have to download the map and make screenshots themselfs (in case of no screenshots with maps).

DB team has a lot of work sometimes ^^

Should the posts inbetween both FAQs be deleted so that both guides are together? Don't really want to put two different guides into the one post.
