Crytek at GDC Europe!

Welcome to a Crymod news post regarding Crytek's upcoming appearance at GDC Europe, where we'll be showing off CryENGINE3 in a variety of live shows as well as talks on the technical side of game development. Today we've got Crytek's coverage there to present.

GDC Europe Attendance
Shown below is our summary of our appearance there from the Crytek official site, which can be found here.

quote:
Frankfurt am Main (Germany), August 11th 2009 - International game developer Crytek will be demonstrating their highly acclaimed all-in-one game development solution, CryENGINE®3, at this year’s GDC Europe (August 17th – 19th) in Cologne, Germany at their booth #131.

The award-winning engine developer will show the powerful new “CryENGINE® LiveCreate™” system. CryENGINE® LiveCreate™ adds real-time multi-platform editing of game content to Crytek’s original What You See Is What You Play CryENGINE®3 Sandbox™ editor, allowing genuine, synchronized cross platform game development for the first time.

“CryENGINE® LiveCreate™ allows developers to work with a single editor, but see and play the results in real-time on PC, PS3 and Xbox360, hooked up to a single dev PC. The engine takes care of the conversion and optimization of assets in real-time; enables instant, cross-platform changes to any part of game creation and as a result materially increases the speed and significantly reduces the risk of multiplatform development. Multiple teams are no longer necessary for simultaneous cross platform development – all you need now is much larger desks!” said Carl Jones, Director of Business Development for CryENGINE.

First publicly previewed at the last Game Developers’ Conference in San Francisco, where it was without doubt one of the standouts of the show, CryENGINE®3 has already been licensed to a number of major companies around the globe.

Crytek's Engine Licensing Team will be available during the show for meetings to discuss licensing details with prospective clients. In addition, Crytek will be hosting a series of public presentations of LiveCreate™, CryENGINE®3 Console and the CryENGINE® 3 Sandbox™ Editor at their booth #131.

... it's a developer's conference... why would they present their new game instead of promoting their engine?

maybe we finally get to see some CE3 PC video?

still, i bet it looks like... CE2! Tongue

the engine auto-optimizing for each platform, thus meaning all you need are 'much larger desks'? I really wanna believe in Crytek (as one of the last great bastions of pc gaming, i really, really do) but based on the nature of all-platform ports (one way or another) and previous statements made by Yerli about having to compromise level design and what not for consoles... it gives me an uneasy feeling, to say the least

They have different design teams working on the different versions, the console levels wont be 1:1 copies of the PC levels.

The whole point of the live create system is to eradicate the need for multiple dev teams. 1 dev team can create the game, then 1 developer clicks export to engine, and the game updates on all platforms instantly. Naturally I'm sure optimizations can be made for each platform. But for testing purposes those would probably be preconfigured for each platform, just like Autoexec files work for CE2. That way it would simply "work".

Yerli's earlier statements were made before this kind of system was envisioned, so I think they can be disregarded now. Things change Wink

I hope for them they dont start dumbing down stuff for the consoles as thats very likely to happen.

i absolutely would freaking hope that what you say is true...

however, i think havoksage is right - and there won't be different levels across the version. it'll just be a make-one-game and 'adjust the settings for each platform until it runs well enough' sort of deal - whether they tweak or let a pre-configuration take care of it. i don't they'll make a level that would run fine on pc but not well on consoles, even after 'optimizations' for 360 and ps3, so they'll just stick to making levels that will at least run well enough on the consoles - and that's where the level design and gameplay will be compromised for PC's; we'll get levels with gameplay potential more in line with console hardware limitations, not according to PC hardware possibilities.

i'm not so much worried about the graphics - i'm sure they'll look very good, at least as good as crysis if not better, which pretty much destroys everything on consoles - other than killzone 2, which holds up fairly well. level design as it affects gameplay, overall scale and detail of levels, number of ai in combat at one time, etc. are the things that concern me. i just would hate it to go back and play crysis after playing crysis 2 and think, 'man, they really had to cut the gonads off of this stuff to make crysis 2 a multiplat'.

havoksage, i really hope that you're right in that things have changed and crytek can pull a magical move and not compromise things Yerli already admitted would have to be compromised, or that you're wrong and that they do have different teams making the levels for PC and console. either way though, my past experiences with other devs/games, my skepticism, logic, and that CE3 vid of ps3 of 360 footage tells me that for Crytek to say, 'oh, all of a sudden we can do it now' would just be a marketing statement, and not much more.

i really really want to be wrong about that, but i can't shake the doubt fellas.

Quit ...

...worrying about the engine getting dumbed down across all platforms...
Reminder that OPTIMIZATION does not mean getting rid of features all the time.

What I am sure they have achieved is, an automated system that automatically scales the game engine features during the exporting process to console without the need of having multiple dev team. This is, in my opinion, a kick ass achievement.

Consequently, an XBOX360 version will look somewhat different than the PS3 since it is some what less powerful (ie. differences in number of AIs, loading time, physics, and even graphics)

On the other hand, the PC version will have all the features and advances. That is why, the PC version will look far better than the consoles and CryEngine 2 especially with new beloved features such as GI.
The fact that they have re-optimized the engine, to me only means more headroom performance wise for more stuff Tongue

But Havoksage,
using the live system and creating different levels for the platforms dont lock themselfes out.

How would you work on a console level without a PC anyways?
If you get what i mean.
