CryENGINE2 exporter for Softimage XSI released
Softimage Announces Support for Crytek’s CryENGINE 2 Game Engine
Integrated Pipeline Solution Built Around the Open COLLADA Standard
| quote: |
...
“SOFTIMAGE|XSI software is an ideal choice for next-generation games, and its pipeline integration with CryENGINE will benefit game developers with a fast and efficient way to export 3D content directly to the CryENGINE,” said Michael Endres, art production manager, Crytek GmbH. “Content created in SOFTIMAGE|XSI software, and used within the CryENGINE™ 2 Sandbox editor, offers a streamlined workflow that enhances and simplifies the creative process in game development,” added Endres.
The combination of SOFTIMAGE|XSI software and COLLADA integration with the CryENGINE 2 is opening new doors in the realm of 3D imaging and character creation for next-generation games. As the complexity of game development mounts, with increased polygon-count models, complex characters and interactions, and higher resolution environments, SOFTIMAGE|XSI software is quickly becoming a preferred solution for developing games in the critically acclaimed CryENGINE2.
“Softimage has been working with Crytek to customize an XSI-based workflow that integrates seamlessly with the popular CryENGINE 2,” said Marc Stevens, general manager of Softimage, Co, and vice president at Avid Technology, Inc. “With the most powerful tools such as SOFTIMAGE|XSI software and CryENGINE 2, game developers will be able to go above and beyond the boundaries of realistic, immersive and adrenaline rush games.”

RE: CryENGINE2 exporter for Softimage XSI released
This is FANTASTIC news! Many thanks.
I've already downloaded the exporter zip and it confirms that it works for Mod Tool.
Many, many thanks to XSI and Crytek for giving us such an amazing gift.
Just one fly in the ointment. A few weeks ago I installed Mod Tool - and it doesn't work. As soon as I try to run it the top menus appear - and then nothing. It just hangs. Now I have a real incentive to get it working!
Anyway, as far as Crysis is concerned, it doesn't get any better than this....
Best regards,
Chris

current and future features
Hi Everbody.
we wanted give you guys a nice surprise package around GDC time, as we present the Engine at this event for the second time.
Even Alex was surprised by the fact that Softimage was releasing the plugin yesterday.
I was very busy preparing GDC and totally forgot to mention it to him.
Neverteless, he will prepare a nice newsletter about it for the non- early adoptors.
Just to let you knowm some facts about the plugin and some future outlooks.
1. The plugin is in beta stage - some things might not work in a streamlined way.
We will fix the bugs as we find them or being reported. This will also be a guniea pig for our documentation. We will improve it based on the questions we will be asked by users.
2. The plugin currently only supports cgf export.
We decided to split the development for the static part and the animation part of the plugin, and release it in 2 phases. This gives us the possiblities to get feedback from you on workflow, bugs and documentation, while we are working on the animation part.
We do not have a date for the next release, but Crytek is now commited to use COLLADA in the asset creation pipeline and therefore has a vital interest to create a stable animation pipeline soon.
3. the exporter supports: material creation, lods, occlusion objects, jointed breakable objects. It has almost all the features (OK - there is the capsule primitive missing right now) you need to create "static" assets similar to the quality and functionality the Crysis assets have.
I am really happy, that Crytek together with XSI got it finally done and to the mod community. Our programmer Peter Nagy and Luc Buldoc from Softimage, did a great job on the plugin.
I hope to see a lot of kick ass models in your mods.
Rest assured, there will be future upgrades and improvements, as Softimage is also very interested get a strong connection between the tools.
Have fun with the addon.
Michael
P.S.
Funkenstein,
make sure you have your characters and animation prepared by the time we release the plugin.
Just assume, that you need to use a non broken hierarchy and normal skinning techniques. The object setup will be the same as for the static objects = ExportNode and the character linked below. We are not sure about the phys skeleton handling, but i will make sure the final application will be streamlined and easy to use.
Until we release the plugin you can export the characters as a static model and tweak the materials already.
For fps weapons, you could link them to a camera and move them through the level to test the visual appearance in the game.
If you are only working on animations, i guess, you are stuck with rendering them into videos and posting them on the forum until we have the plugin ready.

Thank you very much evilemil! I appreciate your time to tell us that we have an animation exporter to look forward to!
Is there any specific place where we should give feedback?

i need some help installing it please guys , as i can't get the plugin to work / show up
i am familiar with 3dmax not the xsi interface - so sorry if i am being thick , but i need some help perhaps a few screenshots to help me get it installed right ?
firstly crysis is in c:\ electronic arts etc - default install no probs there - sandbox 2 works ok etc
2- installed xsi mod tool - the motor fix , and cross talk 2.5 - as per the readme - and all in c:\ softimage
3 have copied ok over the crysis dir into crysis game dir
4 first question - Addon.xsiaddon dir - does that go in the root of mod tool ? or in the addons sub dir ??
5 re this bit -
• In XSI, Set the project path: Crytek > CryProperties.
o Bin32 Path
 Ex.: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Bin32
o Export Path
 This is the working folder. When exporting, a COLLADA file (.dae) is created and the resource compiler is automatically executed with it as an input. The resource compiler generates a .cfg or a .mtl file, depending on your export settings.
 Ex.: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Game\Objects\XSI_Assets
not being familiar with the modtool interface , where does one find this project path section - i have played around with it - but i am not convinced i am in the right place - 3dmax interface i know where to go - xsi interface i am lost ??
could someone please do some screnshots to help me install correct - i have yet to see the drop down crytek menu in the xsi interface - so i am definately either being extremely thick , or doing something wrong , or a combination of the two - lol :-)
HELP PLEASE !!! :-)
Roger

Open XSI, drag and drop the .xsiaddon file into it
the crytek menu should show up right away
and that should answer all your other questions aswell
