Crytek to Feature Cross Platform CryENGINE® 2 at GDC

Frankfurt, Germany, Jan 29 - Crytek GmbH will demonstrate their multi award winning CryENGINE® 2 game development middleware and their Sandbox 2TM game editor again at this year's Game Developer Conference on February 18 - 22 in San Francisco. First publicly shown at last year's conference, and recently released as the technology underlying their critically acclaimed PC game, Crysis, this year's engine will be shown for the first time running on multiple hardware platforms such as the PS3 and Xbox 360, to a select audience. In addition, there will be a public demonstration showing how well the fully optimized engine can perform on a budget PC which can be put together for around 600 dollars complete, including keyboard and mouse. Visitors will be able to see for themselves the extremely high quality that can be achieved on relatively inexpensive consumer hardware today using the CryENGINE® 2.

Cevat Yerli, Sten Hübler and Bernd Diemer will host a GDC session entitled "Crysis in the Making", providing a behind the scenes look at the challenges of developing Crysis and the CryENGINE® 2. Other highlights of the show will be various conference talks and discussions involving key Crytek technical staff including Chris Evans, Technical Art Lead, Tomas Neumann, Crytek's Audio Programmer, and Tiago Sousa, R&D Graphics Programmer.

In addition, Crytek will once again be hosting a series of public presentations at their booth #6611 in the North Hall, where the topics to be covered will range from live demonstrations of rapid level creation using the Sandbox 2 editor, working with the next generation features of the CryENGINE® 2 animation system, adding immersive sound and interactive music to your game, to a discussion of the overall CryENGINE® 2 design, graphical pipelines and overall architecture. These presentations will be lead by many of the leading members of the Crytek's game development and engine teams. For the first time, Crytek will also be joined at their booth by some of their many licensing partners, which will also show the CryENGINE® 2 being used for architectural visualizations and serious games applications. Seating for the presentations is on a first come, first served basis, and likely to fill quickly. Each of these presentations will repeat twice each day; no appointment is needed to attend.

Anyone wishing to make a private appointment to discuss licensing opportunities, or to arrange for a showing of the console versions of the engine, should make their request by emailing gdc2008@crytek.com, including details of who would be attending the meeting and the purpose of their requests. Meetings can also be arranged during the show by contacting the booth receptionist, provided a time slot is still available. As the time for meetings is quite limited and slots fill quickly, it's recommended to make booking requests as soon as possible.

Would you have to use autoaim then? lol
FPS games on console sucks big time...

But I bet they'll make alot of money out of it though.

I'm really hoping they wouldn't abandon the PC people once it's ported to the consoles Smile

This will be great for promoting cyr2engine. I would love to see more development firms picking up cry2 and once there is an nice API for 360 and PS3 a lot more studios will look seriously at usuing it for their next gen project.

I would love to see crytek setup something simlar to the UDN (unreal dev network) where there is constant support for liscenses and mountains of documentation and examples to wade through.

The PS3 has the ability to use any (wireless and wired) usb mouse/keyboard. The bad thing about it is that the developers would need to manually add controls into the game, because you currently can't map controls on the PS3.

don't forget about us Crytek Pleased

but yeah, really go all out and make PS3 and Xbox versions - I've been thinking recently that the PS3 is more powerful than any of our PC's anyway - I only say this because of the way that Final Fantasy 13 looks - I dont' really know for sure of course

The thing with PCs is the game isn't being optimized for one type of computer, there are thousands of different variations.

With a console everyone has the same thing, so they can focus on optimizing the hell out of a game so it can run at optimum speeds on one.

I wouldn't be surprised if the CryEngine 2 runs really really well on one. However I think Cervat said himself that they wouldn't be capable of the intense physics engine.

You never know until it happens eh?

hmm.. i would be surprised about the physics engine.. I mean, Star Wars: The force Unleashed has 3 different engines working together to give the player and indepth experience. It uses Havoc for the main engine, then 2 other engines which imparts the physical and reactionary aspects of the enviroment and the AI.

too bad its only a console release.. however that aside.. when i saw the demos i was thinking damn.. that has to be for PC yet is console only.

I would truly be surprised if CRY2 physics did travel over..

i seem to recall several videos of cevat saying there was no intentions of porting to consoles... what happened to that?

is it the lackluster sales in pc forcing them to port to consoles so they can make up loss revenue?

Thats a joke right? PS3 is WAY behind in the console wars. As Sony hasen't released any total sales figures since the end of september its hard to say where they are at right now. The only thing I can find for PS3 really is 5.5 million consoles sold at the end of september, 75K units sold a week through october, 100K sold through november up until black friday. Then for the xmas season 3.2 million. Add this together though and you only have 9.2 million which is still half the sales of Xbox 360. Plus the highest selling game on PS3 compared to Xbox 360 is 4x lower.

Sorry, but if crysis were to be shipped on both consoles xbox 360 would most likely sell better with the much larger user base it reaches. Plus the fact 360 is known for FPS games and the much much much larger online payer base and online system they have would help sales.

No matter which way u look at it the console versions will surely have to be scaled back because of the ram limitations. Somehow i can't see the levels being anywhere near as big as on the pc and that means loading screens ( i know.. half life2 had them too). Don't get me wrong i have an xbox360 and am very happy with it crackdown is awesome and if only crysis had the facility to record your singleplayer game like in halo3. As for ps3 jaggies, too much shadow flicker bland 1st party games etc although drakes fortune is pretty good.

So nobody else has noticed that they're saying that they are showcasing the CryEngine2 - the game engine - and not Crysis? Crytek has already stated that Crysis would basically suck on consoles as they are now. Showcasing the game engine is quite different, and I think that this is fantastic. Big Grin
